Make Your Marketing More Effective With The Right Font

No matter what digital or print marketing campaigns or products your business employs to get its message across, they all rely on one thing – fonts. The font choices you make can make a huge difference in how your advertising and promotions are received by your target market. Too many small business owners and marketers use the default font to create branding and promo items. In today’s tech-savvy world, though, there are an unlimited number of fonts and typographies available, with more being designed and created every day.

Of course, the sheer volume of available fonts can make the choice daunting. That’s why a full understanding of your branding and promotional products and sales goals is so important. Font choices can be critical when they’re being used to represent the business you’ve worked so hard to build. The following three reasons will help you understand why font choice matters so much in marketing and branding your business.

  • The Right Font Increases – or Decreases – Readability: Serif fonts (fonts with a stroke at the beginning and end of a letter) and sans serif fonts (fonts without this characteristic) make a big difference in how easy a font is to read. That little stroke leads the reader’s eye more easily from each letter to create the spelled-out word. While you’re designing your promo pieces, keep readability in mind.
  • The Font Your Choose Can Evoke An Emotion or Tell A Story: Think about a font that resembles traditional varsity lettering. It’s perfect for representing a sports team or league but would be far less successful if used to represent a law firm or accounting agency. That’s because it calls a certain purpose and nostalgia to mind that ‘fits’ the former use, while seeming out of place for the latter.
  • The Right Font Says A Lot About The Personality of Your Business: You would never expect a children’s retailer and a bridal boutique to use the same fonts in their promo materials, would you? Of course not, because the look, feel, and tone of their business personalities are so different. A children’s retailer would use a font that depicts fun, play and education. A bridal boutique would use a font that evokes feelings of love, romance, and allure.

Picking the right font to represent your brand starts with understanding your target market, knowing your brand’s personality, and ensuring your font’s story is cohesive with the products and services you offer. Additionally, as a general rule of thumb, marketing and branding products should be limited to two or three differing fonts per digital or printed product. Using more than three fonts leads to visual cluttering which, in some cases, may negatively impact readability.
