Five Ways To Put Your Counters To Work In Your Retail Store

Running a brick and mortar retail store means you rely on additional marketing methods versus online-only retailers. One of the tools of retail marketing is your store’s checkout counter. Your retail counters are an ideal place for marketing because by the time customers reach your checkout counter, they’re already making purchases. That makes your checkout counter the perfect place to create additional purchase options for those customers. Here are five easy ways to put your retail counters to work as additional points of purchase that make customers happy and increase your bottom line.

  1. Tell customers how they can become VIP members. Use table signs and posters to tell customers the perks and privileges of VIP membership. Then use key fobs and punch-able business cards to create a customer loyalty program that keeps them coming back to your store. Because people love to share membership perks and because key fobs are in sight on their keychains all the time, they do double duty by serving as marketing pieces and customer appreciation pieces.
  2. Shine the spotlight on discounts, sales, and promotions. Additional discounts are a clever way to boost in-store sales. Think of how a restaurant tells you about the special of the day. It’s printed on the menu and the waitstaff is trained to tell you about it. Use that same technique to create countertop signs that mimic posters strategically placed throughout the store boasting sales info. Couple that with friendly cashiers, create graphics, and verbiage that point shoppers toward discount areas, clearance aisles, BOGO sales, and add-on accessories they might have overlooked.
  3. Retail marketing is famous for creating impulse buys. Position impulse items at your register to prompt customers to keep shopping even while they’re in line waiting their turn. It’s a great place to position small, easy-to-pic up impulse item. Add overhead banners and signs that remind consumers not to forget batteries to go with their new electronics, earrings to go with their new outfit, or a muffin to go with their cup of coffee.
  4. Steer customers to your online presence. Counter displays, business cards, and postcards are an easy way to accomplish three marketing goals. 1: Send customers to online review sites to share glowing testimonials and consumer review ratings. 2: Send customers to your website for additional sales, resources and product use information. 3: Send customers to your social media pages to boost fans, likes, and post photos of your products in use.
  5. Invite shoppers to enter a giveaway, sweepstakes, or contest. Add a stack of entry forms or instructions for online entries. Position a fishbowl to collect business cards. Display a stack of scratch-off tickets for additional discounts. In other words, use posters and banners to reward your customers and create opportunities to connect with them offline.
